A one-person strike appeared next to a concrete truck Monday on Sherman Avenue.

The picketer stood in front of an Ozinga concrete mixer parked in front of Philbrick Park. He held a sign that read: “I.U.O.E Local 150 ON STRIKE against Ozinga, A.K.A. Ozinga Bros. Inc. for recognition as majority bargaining representative of company’s operating engineer employees.”

Ozinga is a frequent source of concrete for the city, and was approved by City Council for a year-long, single-source contract on Jan. 24, 2022. The ready-mix concrete is supplied from Ozinga’s Evanston yard, located at 2525 Oakton St.

Public Works Director Edgar Cano told the RoundTable that city staff were not aware of the picket, and that it did not delay any of the city’s current projects. The National Labor Relations Board website shows an active case between Local 150 and Ozinga dating back to June 10, 2022.

The RoundTable requested comment and information from both the union and Ozinga three times each since Tuesday via phone conversations and voicemail messages, but neither organization has provided it as yet. This story will be updated as both parties provide further information.
